The AGC Tenwek Cardiothoracic Centre in Bomet County has acquired a state-of-the-art Dual-Source CT Scanner to boost the diagnosis of heart and lung conditions.
The Somatom Pro.Pulse CT Scanner, manufactured by Siemens Healthineers, ushers in a new era of speed, accuracy, and safety in diagnosing conditions, particularly for patients with complex cardiac profiles.
The Centre Director Russ White, said that the acquisition is anticipated to reduce patient waiting time, minimise diagnostic errors, and broaden access to advanced cardiothoracic imaging not only for Bomet residents but for patients from across Kenya and neighboring countries.
“With the rising burden of non-communicable diseases like heart disease and cancer in the region, Tenwek’s investment in such technologies positions it as a leader in specialised healthcare and medical innovation,” he said.
Dr White explained that the scanner is capable of producing clear, high-quality images in seconds, even for patients with irregular heart rhythms or those who cannot hold their breath.
“Unlike traditional CT scanners, the Dual CT scanner utilises dual-source scanning technology, featuring two X-ray tubes and detectors that enable it to capture cardiac images in just 86 milliseconds,” he said.
This capability is particularly advantageous for patients whose heart rates cannot be regulated with medication, such as those in emergency situations or pediatric cases.
“One of the scanner’s noteworthy features is ZeeFree Motion Correction, an automated system that compensates for patient movement and breathing. This ensures sharp imaging even when patients are unable to remain still—addressing a significant challenge in thoracic imaging,” White added.
The system is also equipped with an AI-driven workflow tool known as myExam Companion, which automatically adjusts scan settings based on patient characteristics such as age, body size, and heart rate.
This not only enhances precision but also simplifies the scanning process for technologists, thereby reducing errors and unnecessary radiation exposure.
“With this technology, we can now make faster, more confident decisions that directly impact patient outcomes,” White emphasized.
The scanner features a powerful Athlon X-ray tube, capable of operating at up to 825 mA at 70 kV.
This allows for the capture of high-quality images using less contrast dye, an important benefit for patients with kidney issues or allergies.
White also said that the acquisition of the Definium Tempo X-ray System, complements the CT scanner by offering a highly automated and ergonomic experience for both patients and staff.
With features like Auto Positioning Suite, Live Video with Patient Overlay, and Flash Pad HD Detectors, the system ensures high-quality images with minimal radiation and maximum efficiency.
Both systems are designed to be energy-efficient and compact, with the CT scanner requiring 31 per cent less space and consuming 20 per cent less energy compared to older models.
“This aligns with Tenwek’s vision of delivering high-impact care while maintaining sustainable operations,” said White.
