The County government of Machakos has surrendered a 20-acre piece of land located in the new Machakos City to the Football Kenya Federation for the establishment of a national football technical center.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti handed over a title deed of the facility to FKF president, Hussein Mohammed at a ceremony held at the governor’s office in Machakos at the weekend.

The development, initiated about two years ago during the reign of former FKF president, Nick Mwendwa will mark the construction of the largest modern football training facility fully funded by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) to the tune of Sh600 million.

The facility, to be constructed in phases, will house a football complex which will include accommodation facilities for national teams and for trainers, administration blocks and offices, a players' training institute, three International standard pitches and a FIFA International Training Center.

The facility will serve as a training ground for referees, coaches and other technical personnel. Development of talents for under 13 and under 16 teams will also be undertaken in the facility, providing a vital springboard for youth football.

Speaking during the ceremony, FKF president Hussein Mohammed said the project will be a game-changer in the development of Kenyan football.

“Football is on an upward trajectory around the world and in Kenya we must not be left behind. We are going to catch-up with everybody else as you have seen in our performance in Chan,” he said.

Mohammed said the hand-over of land by the county government was the last hurdle to the full implementation of the project which he said once complete will serve as the headquarters of FKF in the country.

“I am glad we have now overcome that key hurdle and now we will embark on rolling out the facility in five phases. Very soon Machakos will be the headquarter of Football Kenya Federation,” he said,

Governor Wavinya said the facility will be a major boost to sports tourism for Machakos as the county will attract huge traffic for sporting activities for both local and international tournaments.

“We are proud to host the facility because it will become a popular destination for major tournaments. This means our tourism and hospitality industry will also thrive alongside the development and improvement of football in our county,” said Wavinya.

The governor added that that the county government was in the process of constructing a level six hospital next to the facility which will offer world class treatment to any injuries that might arise in the facility.

“We will have a private wing at the hospital which will offer almost an instant response to any player of fan that may require medical attention,” she said.
