A prison warder from Naivasha medium prison has taken his life by hanging himself, as cases of suicide in the lakeside continued to rise.

The lifeless body of the warder in his mid-30s was found hanging from a tree in the Marula area off the Nairobi-Nakuru highway by members of the public before police were called in.

Early in the year, another prison warder committed suicide following a fallout in his workplace.

In the latest incident, the warder, who was off-duty, walked to the scene, which is 5 km from the prison, before deciding to take his life.

Confirming the incident, Naivasha DCIO Isaac Kiama said that the motive behind the incident was not known, as the deceased did not leave behind a suicide note.

Kiama said that the body had been collected and taken to the local mortuary, and an inquest file had been opened as part of their investigations.

“Members of the public informed police of a body that was hanging from a tree, and on inquiry it emerged that he was a warder attached to Naivasha medium prison,” he said.

Meanwhile, police are seeking a suspect who defiled a two-year-old minor in Naivasha in a bizarre incident that left residents seething with rage.

During the beastly incident in Lakeview estate, the suspect said to be a casual laborer, broke one of the minor’s hands before fleeing.

According to the chair of Naivasha GBV cluster group, John Kinuthia, the minor was admitted to Naivasha sub-county hospital in serious condition.

He said that the suspect, who is the step-father, had been living with the minor’s mother for the last six months before committing the act.

“The minor whose hand was broken by the suspect is responding well to treatment, and police have launched a manhunt for the man,” he said.
